Dr. Alwin Wagener, PhD, LAC, NCC
is a Licensed Associate Counselor in New Jersey who received his Doctoral Degree in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and his Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Carolina University. Dr. Wagener is also Board Certified as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). Dr. Wagener is focused on understanding his clients' experiences and perspectives, so that the support he provides is tailored to their needs and individual situations. He has experience supporting clients with a wide range of concerns and diagnoses including relationship challenges, trauma reactions, depression, anxiety, interpersonal violence, life transitions, identity concerns, and grief/loss. He supports his clients using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) along with a variety of approaches and techniques from other counseling theories and models, including Person-Centered, Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy, Gestalt, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Jungian Analysis and Motivational Interviewing. His past clinical work was in a community counseling center, an integrated-care family health center and several college counseling centers. In addition to the clinical work, Dr. Wagener researches in the field of counseling and has a number of publications in peer-reviewed journals on the topics of nightmares and dreams among survivors of intimate partner violence, international counseling work, and metaphor use in counseling.
